Drawing on an integrative, relational framework for understanding therapeutic processes, this workshop will help clinicians understand personality disorders in terms of dimensions of self- and interpersonal functioning with a view to better personalize psychotherapy for this population. Specifically, the workshop will (1) provide an overview of self- and interpersonal-related difficulties in the context of personality disorder; (2) outline a research-based approach to case formulation in support of personalized intervention; and (3) describe therapeutic processes by which clinicians can address pathogenic beliefs that perpetuate self- and interpersonal dysfunction.

Meet the Speaker

David Kealy is an Associate Professor in the Psychotherapy Program at the Department of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, BC, Canada. He engages in research and teaching on psychotherapy and on personality- and identity-related difficulties, as well as mental health concerns among young adults, men, and individuals with adverse childhood experiences. He has published widely in academic journals and is co-editor of the book Contemporary Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: Evolving Clinical Practice. Prior to UBC, David worked for many years in public mental health services as a social worker, therapist, and clinical supervisor.

After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

Conceptualize and treat personality disorders using individualized case formulation and targeted therapeutic interventions.
