Learn how to help adult scapegoat survivors of narcissistic parents heal deeply and effectively using Control-Mastery Theory. This training offers a clear roadmap for identifying core trauma-based beliefs and safely disconfirming them through the therapeutic relationship. If you work with survivors of childhood narcissistic abuse, this presentation will give you the tools to do transformative, targeted work that creates lasting change.

Why this course?

You'll learn how to integrate the PFM into your existing manner of working and strengthen the work you're already doing.

This in-depth presentation will show therapists how to effectively understand and treat adult scapegoat survivors of narcissistic parents using Control-Mastery Theory. Attendees will learn how these clients unconsciously adopt beliefs of defectiveness to preserve attachment to a pathologically narcissistic parent. You’ll discover how to identify and disconfirm these "pathogenic beliefs" in therapy to support the client's goals. Through rich clinical examples and a 5-step case formulation model, you'll gain a practical framework for customizing your interventions. By attending, you'll leave equipped to build stronger therapeutic alliances, understand hidden trauma dynamics, and help your clients reclaim a higher quality of life.

This course will cover:

Understand how a narcissistic parent influences the child to assume the blame for all the family’s problems

Name three ways in which empirical research has shown that children of narcissistic parents suffer psychologically

Understand how and why the scapegoat child sacrifices healthy developmental goals to stay in a relationship with their narcissistic parent

Know and apply Control-Mastery Theory’s Five-Step Case Conceptualization to scapegoat survivors in treatment

After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

Apply Control-Mastery Theory’s five-step case conceptualization model to develop individualized treatment plans for scapegoat survivors of narcissistic parents.

Identify the core pathogenic beliefs that scapegoat survivors adopt to preserve attachment to a narcissistic parent.

Demonstrate how to identify and respond in pro-plan ways to help clients safely disconfirm trauma-based beliefs and promote psychological recovery.
